Islamabad, Aug 24 (V7N)- Former cricket captains from 21 countries have expressed concern over the health of Pakistan’s World Cup-winning captain and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, urging the government to ensure proper medical treatment for him.
In a letter addressed to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the former captains said Imran Khan was taken to hospital for only a few hours last week, where his health was examined by a state-appointed medical board.
The former cricketers made three key demands. First, they called for a medical board to be formed under the direction of Pakistan’s Supreme Court, with Imran Khan’s personal doctors included in the panel. They also urged authorities to seriously investigate reports that he has lost vision in his right eye.
Second, they called for Imran’s family members to be allowed to meet him every week, in accordance with a court order, without administrative obstacles.
Third, they demanded that any treatment recommended by the medical board be provided without delay.
The letter, written by former Australian captain Greg Chappell, noted that Imran Khan is 73 years old and has spent more than three years in prison.
The former captains said there may be legal and political disputes surrounding Imran Khan’s cases, but ensuring court-ordered medical procedures is not a political demand. Rather, they described it as a matter of basic humanity.
Earlier in February, 14 former cricket captains had submitted a petition calling for humane treatment and proper medical care for Imran Khan.
Imran Khan was imprisoned in August 2023 and subsequently faced more than 100 cases, including allegations involving state secrets and the sale of state gifts. Khan and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party have repeatedly claimed that the cases are politically motivated.
