New York, Aug 22 (V7N)- US President Donald Trump has threatened to declare the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz as United States territory amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera reported the development on Saturday (August 22).

Speaking at a rally in Garden City, New York, on Friday, Trump said that after defeating Iran, he would move quickly to declare the Strait of Hormuz as US territory.

Trump also claimed that the United States already has control over the strategic waterway.

“We have a blockade. No ship can pass through unless we want it,” he said.

Meanwhile, speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews on Friday, Trump said Iran wants to reach an agreement with the United States but is not yet prepared to accept Washington’s conditions.

“We see what is happening,” Trump said, claiming that Iran was facing severe economic and military difficulties.

He alleged that Iran had no money, no effective navy or air force, and was struggling to pay its soldiers and police personnel. Trump also claimed that the country was experiencing inflation of around 350 percent.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically important maritime routes, serving as a major passageway for global oil and energy shipments.
