Cali, Aug 08 (V7N) – Right-wing lawyer and political newcomer Abelardo de la Esperanza has been sworn in as Colombia's president, pledging tougher action against armed groups, significant cuts in government spending and a revival of the country's oil and gas sector.
The inauguration ceremony was held in the southwestern city of Cali on Friday (August 7), amid heightened security concerns in the volatile region.
In his inaugural address, de la Esperanza vowed to take a hard line against armed organizations and drug-related violence.
"There will be no room for strategies that undermine the country's stability," he said, pledging to continue efforts to defeat what he described as "drug terrorism."
The 48-year-old president, known to supporters as "El Tigre" (The Tiger), is a newcomer to national politics. He built his wealth and public profile as a lawyer and businessman before entering the presidential race.
De la Esperanza also financed his presidential campaign with his personal wealth, distinguishing him from candidates who rely heavily on established political parties and major campaign donors.
His administration is expected to focus on strengthening security, reducing public expenditure by as much as 40 percent and increasing investment in Colombia's oil and gas industry.
The new president takes office at a time when Colombia continues to face security challenges involving armed groups and drug trafficking, making his proposed security and economic policies key areas of public and international attention.
