Seattle, July 27 (V7N)- At least two people were killed and five others injured in a shooting near the iconic Space Needle tower in Seattle, United States.
The incident took place around 6 pm local time on Sunday near the Seattle Center area, according to reports from BBC and Reuters.
At the time of the shooting, the popular “Bite of Seattle” food festival was underway, where hundreds of people had gathered. Witnesses said several gunmen suddenly opened fire, causing panic among festival attendees.
Two people died at the scene, while at least five others sustained injuries. Among the injured was a two-year-old child, who was taken to hospital and reported to be in stable condition. A 56-year-old woman was also hospitalized in critical condition. Another injured person reportedly refused hospital treatment after suffering minor injuries.
The Seattle Fire Department confirmed that two people were killed and five others were injured in the shooting, local media outlets including The Seattle Times and KOMO reported.
Seattle Police said in a post on social media platform X that multiple people had been shot in the Seattle Center area. Authorities urged residents and visitors to avoid the area while police continued their investigation.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots around 6 pm. Police and emergency response teams quickly arrived at the scene and transported the injured to nearby hospitals.
Two suspects arrested
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson said two suspects have been arrested in connection with the shooting.
In a statement, the mayor praised the Seattle Police Department for its rapid response and the arrest of the suspects. However, she did not disclose details about their identities.
Condemning the incident as a “horrific act of violence,” Mayor Wilson said the affected families are facing an extremely difficult time. She added that the community is struggling to understand how an event meant to celebrate culture, unity and happiness suddenly turned into a scene of violence.
