New Delhi, July 27 (V7N)- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the formation of a high-powered task force led by technology entrepreneur Nandan Nilekani to bring reforms to the country’s examination system.
Modi made the announcement in a video message shared on social media platforms Instagram and X on Sunday (July 26).
In the message, the Prime Minister said India’s examination system must become more reliable, transparent and trustworthy. He emphasized the need to adopt modern technology to improve the examination process.
"Keeping this in mind, we have decided to form a high-powered task force under the leadership of world-renowned technology expert Nandan Nilekani. The task force will focus on examination reforms, and necessary steps will be taken based on its recommendations," Modi said.
He also said the government is continuously taking measures to protect the future of students. According to him, those responsible for harming students’ futures have been arrested, while fast-track courts have been established to ensure quick disposal of related cases.
Modi added that the government is also working on introducing stricter legal provisions in Parliament to prevent examination-related irregularities.
The move comes after widespread controversy over alleged irregularities and question paper leaks in several competitive examinations across India.
Meanwhile, the central government has proposed amendments to the Public Examinations Act to take stronger action against question leaks and organized cheating. The proposed changes include time-bound investigations, speedy trials and tougher punishments for those involved in examination fraud.
The newly formed task force, headed by Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of technology giant Infosys, will examine the use of technology and recommend structural reforms to make government examinations across India more transparent, efficient and credible.
The announcement comes amid weeks of protests led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) demanding reforms in the education system and accountability over examination irregularities. The controversy also led to the resignation of India’s Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, according to reports.
