New Delhi, Jul 24 (V7N)- Leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)-led movement have announced that their nationwide protests demanding reforms in India's education system and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will continue, while talks with the government are expected to take place on Friday (July 24).
Reuters reported the development, quoting a spokesperson for the organization.
The announcement came hours after Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day overnight fast, raising hopes that a possible resolution could emerge from the ongoing standoff between the government and protesters.
Thousands of young people have gathered in India's capital New Delhi, demanding accountability over the question paper leak controversy and calling for the resignation of the education minister.
The protests have emerged as one of the biggest challenges faced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government since it came to power in 2014. Opposition parties have also expressed support for the protesters' demands.
Several media reports have suggested that the ongoing CJP-led movement has disrupted proceedings of the monsoon session of the Indian Parliament, which began earlier this week.
CJP spokesperson Saurabh Das told reporters on Thursday night that the meeting between government representatives and CJP leaders would be held at a neutral venue.
"We hope the government will consider the matter with an open mind and listen to the youth and students of this country who have been on the streets for a long time. We will present our demands in more detail and hope the government will listen to us," Saurabh Das said.
The talks are being closely watched as both sides seek a way forward amid growing public pressure over examination irregularities and education system reforms.
