New Delhi, Jul 24 (V7N)- Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has accused the Narendra Modi-led government of responding harshly to student protests demanding reforms in India's education system and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
In an article published in The Hindu on Friday (July 24), Sonia Gandhi said that students protesting under the banner of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) are seeking accountability and improvements in the education sector. She alleged that instead of addressing their demands, the government has responded with "cowardice and cruelty."
Sonia claimed that the government has treated protesting students not as the future of the country but as "enemies of the nation." She criticized the handling of demonstrations related to alleged examination paper leaks and concerns over the education system.
The Congress leader further alleged that the actions taken by police forces under the Union Home Ministry against student protesters reflect a pattern of suppressing dissent. She referred to the police actions during the anti-CAA-NRC protests in 2020 and also mentioned the treatment of female wrestlers during their protests.
Sonia Gandhi said peaceful student demonstrations have gained momentum across India in recent weeks, with young people raising concerns over examination irregularities, paper leaks and what they describe as the declining standards of the education system.
She called for the government to listen to the voices of students and take meaningful steps toward ensuring transparency, accountability and reforms in the education sector.
