Baghdad, Jul 20 (V7N)- Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is set to visit Tehran next week, just days after his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington. The visit is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations between Iraq and Iran and discussing the growing tensions in the Middle East.
In a statement on Sunday (July 19), Iraq’s Foreign Ministry said that several memorandums of understanding (MOUs) will be signed during the visit to expand cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
The ministry said the agreements aim to further develop Iraq-Iran relations and safeguard the mutual interests of both nations.
The visit comes at a sensitive time as Baghdad attempts to maintain strong relations with Tehran while continuing its strategic partnership with Washington.
Last week, during a joint appearance with President Donald Trump at the White House, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi announced that US military forces would leave Iraq by September 30.
He also said there would be “no justification” for Iran-backed armed groups to continue operating in Iraq after the US troop withdrawal.
Iraq has long positioned itself as a mediator between the United States and Iran amid ongoing regional tensions. Baghdad has repeatedly used its diplomatic relations with both countries to encourage dialogue and prevent further escalation of conflicts in the Middle East.
