Washington, Jun 02 (V7N) — U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed optimism that a ceasefire agreement with Iran could be reached within the next week, potentially paving the way for the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking in an interview with ABC News on Monday, Trump said negotiations with Tehran were progressing and that a deal to extend the existing ceasefire could be finalized soon. He added that such an agreement would help restore maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies.
Trump also referred to tensions involving Israel and Lebanon, describing them as a temporary setback in the broader peace process.
"There was a little problem today, but I resolved it very quickly," Trump said, claiming that he spoke with both Hezbollah and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to halt hostilities. According to Trump, both sides subsequently ceased firing.
Earlier, the White House announced a third revision of a proposed peace agreement with Iran. While details of the latest draft have not been made public, Trump claimed on his Truth Social platform that Iran is eager to finalize the deal. Reports indicate that the revised proposal includes provisions related to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and other security issues.
However, Tehran has maintained that it will not accept any agreement unless the rights and interests of the Iranian people are fully protected. Iranian officials have also emphasized that key issues, including sanctions relief and regional security concerns, must be addressed before a final settlement can be reached.
