Jakarta, Dec 22 (V7N)- At least 16 people were killed and 18 others seriously injured in a devastating road accident on Indonesia’s main island of Java, according to a report by the Washington Post on Monday (December 22).

The accident occurred shortly after midnight local time when a passenger bus traveling from the capital Jakarta to Yogyakarta lost control while navigating a curve on the Krapiak Toll Road in the city of Semarang.

The bus reportedly crashed into a concrete barrier and overturned, trapping several passengers inside. There were 34 passengers on board at the time of the accident.

Authorities said six people died on the spot, while the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. Ten more victims later succumbed to their injuries while being transported for medical treatment. Many of the injured remain in critical condition, hospital officials said.

Rescue teams responded promptly to the scene, and an official investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that the bus may have lost control while turning, though authorities have not yet confirmed whether speed, mechanical failure, or driver error played a role.

Road accidents are a frequent concern in Indonesia, particularly during overnight travel on major highways.
