Tahiti, Nov 28 (V7N) — At least seven people have been killed in a devastating landslide on the Pacific island of Tahiti, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Thursday.
The deadly incident occurred early Wednesday in an eastern village of the island following a full week of continuous heavy rainfall, according to AFP. Officials fear the death toll may rise as many more people remain missing.
In a condolence message, the French government assured full support for the families of the victims.
Local authorities reported that multiple houses were destroyed in the landslide. Search and rescue operations began immediately but were temporarily halted after a second landslide struck the area, posing further risks for rescuers.
Emergency teams are expected to resume operations as soon as conditions permit.
