Washington, D.C., Nov 28 (V7N) — A National Guard member who was shot near the White House has died, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed. The update was reported by CNN.

The White House identified the deceased as 20-year-old Sarah Backstrom, a resident of West Virginia.

President Trump also said that the condition of the second injured National Guard member, Andrew Wolf, remains critical.

The shooting took place on Wednesday (November 26) when a gunman opened fire on National Guard personnel near the White House. Two soldiers were struck by bullets, and authorities later detained a 29-year-old Afghan citizen as the prime suspect.

In response to the attack, officials announced the deployment of 500 additional National Guard troops to bolster security across the U.S. capital.
