Oslo, Oct 10 (V7N) – Venezuelan democracy activist Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday (October 10).

The Committee recognized Machado for her tireless efforts to protect democratic rights and her ongoing struggle to transition Venezuela from dictatorship to democracy.

Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, representing victims of nuclear bombings and advocating for a nuclear-free world.

This year, US President Donald Trump had also expressed interest in the award, but did not receive it.

A total of 338 individuals and organizations were nominated for the 2025 Peace Prize. The Nobel Committee maintains strict confidentiality about nominees, and the list will remain sealed for 50 years.
