Madrid, Sept 23 (V7N) – The Spanish government has issued a full arms embargo on Israel in an effort to prevent further violence in the blockaded Gaza Strip. The decree, approved on Tuesday, prohibits the transfer of military equipment, dual-use products, and related technology to Israel, and also bans their import into Spain.
Spanish Finance Minister Carlos Cuervo stated that the embargo extends to requests for aviation fuel that could be used for military purposes. Additionally, products originating from illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are barred from import and promotion in Spain.
Trade Minister emphasized that Spain’s action represents a major step toward creating an international framework for a complete arms embargo against Israel.
Although Spain had imposed a partial arms ban on Israel in 2023 following the outbreak of violence in Gaza, gaps in enforcement had allowed military-related items to reach Israel. The new decree now provides a legal basis for full compliance.
The ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza have killed over 65,000 Palestinians and injured more than 150,000, with many more believed trapped under rubble. Meanwhile, over ten countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, have formally recognized Palestine as an independent and sovereign state within the last two days, amid continuing Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank.
