FORT LAUDERDALE, Dec 07 (V7N) — Inter Miami captured their first-ever MLS Cup title on Saturday with a 3–1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps at Chase Stadium, powered by two late goals assisted by Lionel Messi. The win sealed Messi’s maiden MLS league championship and marked the culmination of his most successful season in American football.

Despite Vancouver dominating long spells and producing several promising chances under the direction of Thomas Mueller, the final ultimately hinged on Messi’s decisive moments. Named MVP of the match, the 38-year-old expressed his satisfaction after achieving one of the club’s most important objectives. He noted that while Miami topped the league last season before exiting early, the MLS Cup had always been their ultimate target.

Miami took an early lead in the eighth minute when Messi released Tadeo Allende into space, whose low cross deflected off Vancouver defender Edier Ocampo and ended up in his own net. Vancouver responded strongly in the second half and equalized after Ali Ahmed drove through the Miami defense and sent a low shot past goalkeeper Rios Novo in the 60th minute.

The momentum shifted again in the 71st minute when Messi intercepted a loose touch from Vancouver and squared the ball to Rodrigo De Paul, who calmly finished to restore Miami’s advantage. Deep into stoppage time, Messi delivered another precise pass to Allende, sealing the victory and sparking emotional scenes on the field. Veteran players Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets—longtime teammates and friends of Messi—appeared visibly moved as they concluded what is expected to be their final professional match.

Messi expressed happiness for the departing stars, acknowledging their lifelong dedication to the game and wishing them well as they step away from their careers.

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham joined the celebrations after the final whistle, praising Vancouver’s effort and emphasizing Miami’s resilience. He noted that while the journey to the title had been filled with challenges, the team’s unity and the brilliance of Messi made the difference. Beckham highlighted the club’s commitment to fulfilling promises to fans, including bringing world-class talent to Miami, and said the team looks forward to building on this success in the coming season.
