GALLE, June 21, (V7N) — The first Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka ended in a draw at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, as Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto etched his name in the history books with centuries in both innings of the match.

Shanto, who struck 148 in the first innings, followed up with a brilliant unbeaten 125 in the second, becoming the 16th Test captain and 14th overall batter to score twin centuries in a Test twice.

Resuming Day 5 at 177-4 with a 187-run lead, Bangladesh opted for a cautious approach. Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim (49) added 109 runs before a run-out ended the stand. Shanto later accelerated, hitting three sixes in a row off Tharindu Rathnayake to take the lead to 295, before declaring at 285-6.

Set a target of 296 in 32 overs, Sri Lanka ended at 72-4, showing early aggression but losing key wickets to left-arm spinner Taijul Islam (3-23) and Nayeem Hasan (1-29). Angelo Mathews, playing his final Test, scored 8.

Earlier in the match, Bangladesh posted 495 in the first innings—Mushfiqur Rahim scoring 163 and Shanto 148—to which Sri Lanka replied with 485, featuring Pathum Nissanka's 187 and Mathews' 105.

The second and final Test begins June 25 in Colombo.
