JAIPUR, India MAY 25 (V7N) – Bangladesh's "Fizz," Mustafizur Rahman, has officially become the country's leading wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League (IPL), surpassing the long-standing record held by all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. This milestone was achieved during Delhi Capitals' match against Punjab Kings on Friday night at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
Mustafizur delivered an impressive spell, claiming 3 wickets for 33 runs in his four overs, elevating his IPL wicket tally to 65 from just 60 innings. This eclipses Shakib Al Hasan's record of 63 wickets, which he accumulated over 70 IPL innings across nine seasons.
The left-arm pacer began the match with 62 wickets. He first drew level with Shakib by dismissing Punjab opener Prabhsimran Singh, caught by Tristan Stubbs, in his very first over. The record-breaking wicket came in the 16th over when Mustafizur sent back Shashank Singh, once again caught by Stubbs. He further extended his tally in the final over, removing Marco Jansen, with Stubbs completing his third catch of the night.
Despite narrowly missing a fourth wicket when a top-edge from Marcus Stoinis landed safely due to a misjudged attempt by two fielders, Mustafizur's performance was a standout in what was a high-scoring encounter. Even though Punjab posted a formidable 206 for 8, Delhi Capitals successfully chased down the target with three balls and six wickets to spare.
Mustafizur joined the Delhi Capitals late in the tournament and played only three matches, finishing with a total of four wickets for the season. The "cutter master" is now expected to join the Bangladesh team in Pakistan for an upcoming three-match T20I series.
