New York, Sep 19 (V7N)- The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned continued attacks by Yemen’s Houthi group against Saudi Arabia, including strikes affecting civilian and energy infrastructure.
The Council also condemned Houthi missile and drone attacks and threats against commercial vessels, reiterating concern over the security of maritime navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Security Council members stressed the importance of protecting commercial ships and their crews and called for navigational rights and freedoms in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb to be respected in accordance with international law.
The Council demanded that the Houthis immediately halt the military escalation and end attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The condemnation comes amid a renewed escalation in and around Yemen. UN officials have reported intensified fighting along Yemen’s western coast, with the Houthi advance toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait contributing to growing regional tensions.
The United Nations has also warned that attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb threaten freedom of navigation, disrupt supply chains and create wider economic risks.
Several Security Council members have called on the Houthis to end attacks on commercial shipping and Saudi Arabia while urging all parties to exercise restraint and pursue a political solution to the conflict.
The Council’s latest position comes as international concern grows over the potential impact of the Yemen conflict on regional stability and one of the world's key maritime trade routes.
