Guwahati, May 12 (V7N) — Himanta Biswa Sarma has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term, reinforcing the continued dominance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the northeastern Indian state.
The oath-taking ceremony was held in Guwahati on Tuesday (May 12), where the Governor administered the oath of office.
The election results reflected a strong mandate for the ruling alliance, with the BJP securing a clear majority in the Assam legislative assembly.
Along with Sarma, four other legislators were sworn in as ministers. Among them were BJP leaders Rameshwar Teli and Ajanta Neog, as well as representatives from allied parties including Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF).
The ceremony was attended by senior BJP leaders and chief ministers from neighboring states.
In the recently concluded elections, the BJP-led alliance secured 82 out of 126 seats. Its allies AGP and BPF won 10 seats each, bringing the coalition total to 102. The opposition Congress secured 19 seats, while smaller parties and independents won the remaining seats.
The BJP first came to power in Assam in 2016, ending 15 years of Congress rule, and retained control again in 2021 before consolidating its position in the latest election.
