Tehran, Apr 21 (V7N) — Iran has formally lodged a complaint with the United Nations Secretary-General and the International Maritime Organization over the seizure of its merchant vessel Tuska, accusing the United States of violating international law.
Allegations against the US
In a statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry described the seizure as “illegal and barbaric,” claiming it breaches international maritime regulations as well as ongoing ceasefire understandings.
Tehran has demanded the immediate release of the ship along with its crew members and sailors.
Claims of intimidation
According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, Iranian authorities also alleged that sailors and their families were intimidated during the operation.
Iran warned that such actions could lead to “serious consequences” and further escalate tensions in already strained maritime and diplomatic relations.
Background context
The dispute comes amid heightened tensions involving maritime security in strategic waterways, with Iran and the United States continuing to exchange accusations over sanctions enforcement and naval activity.
