Washington, Jan 14 (V7N) — The United States has issued a stern warning to Iran, urging it not to carry out executions of anti-government protesters detained during the ongoing unrest, warning of “very strong action” if such executions proceed.
US President Donald Trump made the warning amid growing international concern over Iran’s handling of the protests. The warning came as the US State Department publicly identified a young Iranian protester currently on death row, according to a report by CNN News.
In a post on social media platform X on Tuesday, the State Department said Iranian authorities are planning to execute 26-year-old protester Irfan Soltani, with the execution reportedly scheduled for January 14.
The post further stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran has arrested more than 10,600 people so far for demanding basic rights, adding that Tehran is already facing intense international pressure over alleged human rights violations.
Speaking on the issue, President Trump said that while peaceful protests are a legitimate expression of public opinion, executing detainees after thousands have been killed would lead to serious consequences for Iran.
When asked what form of assistance the United States may provide to the Iranian people, Trump indicated that Washington is considering various options, including economic assistance, though he did not provide further details.
The combination of mass arrests, possible executions, and escalating warnings from Washington has raised concerns among international observers that the situation in Iran could further deteriorate in the coming days.
