Dhaka, Jan 08 (V7N) — A street in the United States has been officially named after former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, a move that has been welcomed by the Bangladeshi expatriate community as a recognition of Bangladesh’s political history and democratic legacy.
The Carpenter Street, located in the heart of Hamtramck city in Michigan, will now be known as Khaleda Zia Street, according to a statement from the BNP Media Cell on Thursday.
The city council recently approved the proposal to rename the section between Joseph Campau and Conault Streets. Expatriates described the decision as more than just a new street name, calling it an international acknowledgment of Bangladesh’s political struggle and leadership on the global stage.
This is not the first time a street in the United States has been named after a Bangladeshi leader. Previously, a street in Chicago was named after former President Ziaur Rahman.
Bangladeshis living abroad expressed excitement over the achievement, viewing it as a testament to the growing political influence of the Bangladeshi community internationally. Hamtramck is known for its diverse neighborhoods, and many believe that naming a street after a former Bangladeshi prime minister will strengthen social and cultural ties between the United States and Bangladesh.
