Caracas, Dec 04 (V7N) – Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has confirmed that he spoke directly with former US President Donald Trump in a phone call held 10 days ago, marking a rare communication between Washington and Caracas during a period of escalating tensions. The revelation was made during an interview broadcast on Venezuelan state television, according to Reuters.
Maduro described the discussion as “sincere”, saying that both sides engaged in direct talks aimed at resolving ongoing crises between the two nations.
Political analysts view this unexpected communication as a potential first step toward a diplomatic process to ease tensions in the Caribbean region, where the United States has been increasing military activities.
Trump, when asked, also acknowledged the phone call, though he refrained from providing further details. The White House likewise did not issue any official statement elaborating on the conversation.
Rising Military Pressure in the Caribbean
Since early September, US forces have carried out more than 20 attacks on vessels suspected of carrying drugs across the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
-
At least 83 people have been killed in these operations.
-
The Trump administration has framed these actions as part of its strategy to exert military pressure on the Maduro government.
The confirmation of the call between the two leaders comes at a time when diplomatic communication has been largely frozen, raising questions about whether this unexpected exchange could signal a shift in US–Venezuela relations.
