Colorado, Sept 11 (V7N) – Three students were critically injured after a shooting occurred at Evergreen High School, about 30 miles southwest of Denver, law enforcement officials confirmed.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office received the first emergency call at approximately 12:24 p.m. local time on Wednesday, reporting gunfire on school grounds. According to spokesperson Jacki Kelley, hundreds of officers quickly responded to the scene. The suspected shooter, a student armed with a handgun, was among those hospitalized.
Kelley noted that no officers discharged their weapons during the incident. The school, which enrolls more than 900 students, was placed on a brief lockdown before being declared safe. “There is no active threat to the community or to our students anymore,” she told reporters.
The three injured students, including the alleged shooter, were transported to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood. All remain in critical condition. Authorities said the gunfire may have taken place just outside the school building but within school property. The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Denver field office confirmed its involvement in the investigation.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed concern and support, stating on X that state troopers were assisting local authorities. “Students should be able to attend school safely and without fear across our state and nation. We are all praying for the victims and the entire community,” he wrote.
Parent-student reunification was organized at Bergen Meadow Elementary School, located about six miles away.
Evergreen High School lies roughly 20 miles from Columbine High School, the site of the 1999 massacre in which 12 students and a teacher were killed—one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.
