Delhi, June 12 (V7N) — A red alert has been declared in the Indian capital Delhi as the heat index—the combined effect of temperature and humidity—soared to a staggering 51.9 degrees Celsius amid a severe heat wave, according to the Indian news agency PTI.

On Wednesday (June 11), weather stations across the city recorded temperatures ranging from 40.9 to 45 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature was registered in Ayanagar at 45 degrees Celsius. Other hotspots included Palam (44.5°C), Ridge (43.6°C), Pitampura (43.5°C), Lodi Road (43.4°C), Mayur Vihar (40.9°C), and Safdarjung Base Station (43.3°C).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that a heat wave is currently sweeping the capital and is expected to persist until Friday (June 13). Along with Delhi, a red alert has also been issued in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, while an orange alert is in effect for Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh.

According to Indian media outlet NDTV, a red alert advises the public to take immediate precautions, including drinking plenty of water, avoiding exposure to the sun, and refraining from going outdoors during the peak afternoon heat.

The soaring temperatures have severely impacted daily life in these states, prompting health authorities to issue warnings amid a rise in heat-related illnesses. Fortunately, the India Meteorological Department forecasts that conditions may improve from Saturday (June 14) onwards, with partly cloudy skies and chances of light rain.

For context, the IMD classifies heat waves based on temperature levels:

  • Mild Heat Wave: 36°C to 37.9°C

  • Moderate Heat Wave: 38°C to 39.9°C

  • Severe Heat Wave: 40°C to 41.9°C

  • Extreme Heat Wave: Above 42°C

Delhi is currently experiencing an extreme heat wave, causing widespread distress and health concerns.
