Miami, June 19 (V7N) — Manchester City kicked off their campaign to defend the FIFA Club World Cup title with a 2-0 win over Wydad Casablanca on Wednesday night. The reigning champions made a strong statement with an early goal from Phil Foden and another from Jeremy Doku to seal the victory.
Wydad Casablanca, the 2022 CAF Champions League winners, earned their spot in the expanded Club World Cup but struggled to match City’s intensity.
City wasted no time asserting their dominance. Just 2 minutes into the match, Phil Foden capitalized on a rebound after Savinho’s shot was parried by Wydad goalkeeper El Mehdi. Foden’s strike set a new record for the fastest goal in Club World Cup history.
Before halftime, City doubled their lead through Jeremy Doku, who converted a right-footed effort from close range after connecting with Foden’s corner.
Despite City’s control, the second half remained goalless. Late drama unfolded in the 88th minute when Rico Lewis was shown a straight red card, reducing Guardiola’s side to 10 men. However, Wydad failed to capitalize, and City comfortably secured the win.
With this victory, Pep Guardiola’s men take a confident step toward defending their Club World Cup title as favorites in the tournament.
