Aug 03, (V7N) - Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for opposition cooperation in addressing political challenges, including the implementation of the July Charter, while criticising the opposition for allegedly adopting the language of the ousted Awami League.

Speaking as chief guest at a discussion organised by the BFUJ and DUJ at the National Press Club marking the second anniversary of the July Mass Uprising, Mirza Fakhrul—also BNP Secretary General—said the opposition must play a strong role in making democracy function effectively.

He recalled the sacrifices made under late Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia to establish democracy, including false cases, enforced disappearances, and prolonged imprisonment of party leaders. He described the July 2024 ouster of "fascist Hasina" as the final victory of a long movement that created space for a democratic government.

Reaffirming BNP's commitment to the July Charter, Mirza Fakhrul said constitutional amendments would be discussed in parliament and that BNP is committed to rebuilding the state through legal procedures. He rejected allegations of inaction, calling them false propaganda, and highlighted BNP's historical role in restoring institutions, introducing the caretaker government system, and promoting a free-market economy.

On the referendum debate, he said BNP had agreed on three issues but differed on one proposal from the Constitution Reform Commission, adding that the party had already explained its position to the public.

He called for dialogue, urging opposition parties to give the government time. "Only five months and a few days have passed. It is not possible to expect everything to be completed properly within this period," he said.

Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon attended as special guest. BFUJ President Obaidur Rahman Shaheen delivered the welcome address, and Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury presented the keynote paper. DUJ President Md Shahidul Islam chaired the session, with General Secretary Khurshid Alam moderating. Senior journalists, press club leaders, and representatives from various journalist organisations were also present.
