Milan, June 10 (V7N) — The speculation has finally come true. Inter Milan have officially appointed former player Christian Chivu as their new head coach. The former Romanian international has signed a two-year contract with the Italian giants.
The announcement was made by the club on Monday (June 9) through an official statement, which was also shared on Inter’s official X handle (formerly Twitter).
After Simone Inzaghi stepped down from his position, Inter wasted no time in selecting their new manager. The appointment marks the return of Chivu, a key member of Jose Mourinho’s treble-winning Inter squad, to the San Siro in a new role.
Chivu, 44, had been managing Serie B side Parma since February, under a contract set to run until June next year. However, he left that post by mutual consent less than four months later to take charge of his former club.
Chivu’s new journey as Inter’s head coach will begin with the FIFA Club World Cup, where their first opponent will be Mexican side Monterrey.
Inter were hopeful of securing a treble this season but fell short, ending the campaign trophyless. Their most painful defeat came in the UEFA Champions League final, where they suffered a crushing 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
Simone Inzaghi, who had been at the helm since 2021, mutually terminated his contract with Inter last Tuesday before agreeing to take over Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal.
Chivu’s appointment comes just eight days before Inter’s Club World Cup campaign begins, as the club looks to turn a new page under their former defensive stalwart.
