Dhaka, Oct 16 (V7N)- Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has urged the government and law enforcement agencies to take effective measures to ensure that members of the Hindu community can celebrate Sharad Durga Puja safely and comfortably.

He made the call in a statement issued on Thursday, October 15, ahead of Sharad Durga Puja 2026.

In the statement, Shafiqur Rahman described Bangladesh as an example of communal harmony, saying people of different religious communities had long observed their religious rituals and festivals according to their respective traditions.

He expressed hope that the Hindu community would be able to celebrate its largest religious festival this year in a secure and peaceful environment.

The Jamaat chief urged the government and relevant law enforcement agencies to take appropriate steps to protect the festivities and uphold the country's tradition of communal harmony.

He also said Jamaat-e-Islami, as the main opposition party in Parliament and an organisation committed to public welfare, would play a responsible role in supporting peaceful celebrations.

Emphasising religious freedom, Shafiqur Rahman said people of different faiths live in Bangladesh and everyone should have the opportunity to practise their religion freely.

He called on Jamaat leaders and activists to uphold their social responsibilities towards people of all religious communities, including Hindus, and to extend cooperation wherever necessary.

The opposition leader appealed to citizens to work together to ensure that Durga Puja is celebrated peacefully across the country.
