Dhaka, Oct 4 (V7N) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has emphasized strong international backing for Bangladesh’s democratic transition ahead of the February elections, noting that the global community, particularly democratic nations, supports the country’s return to electoral democracy.

He made the remarks upon returning from the United States on Friday, October 3, after accompanying Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“Our message is clear: we are preparing for the upcoming February elections to restore democracy, following the guidance of our leader Tarique Rahman. The world, especially democratic nations, fully supports this transition,” Fakhrul told journalists at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The delegation included BNP Acting Chairman’s Advisor Humayun Kabir, Jamaat-e-Islami Deputy Amir Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, and Joint Convenor Tasnim Zara. Fakhrul confirmed that discussions were held with representatives from several countries during the UN session.

He described the visit as successful, highlighting that for the first time, the Chief Adviser invited key political parties to demonstrate national unity and present Bangladesh’s situation to the world. Fakhrul also said the engagements in New York were beneficial for both Bangladesh and global democratic advocacy.

Responding to reports of harassment at the airport upon arrival, he dismissed the incidents as politically motivated acts by the ruling Awami League.
