Dhaka, Sept 6 (V7N) – Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), will return to the country well before the upcoming national election to lead the party directly, senior BNP leader Dr. A.Z.M. Zahid Hossain has said.
Speaking as chief guest at the national conference of Pubali Bank Employees’ Association in Motijheel, Dhaka, on Saturday, the BNP standing committee member confirmed that Rahman would not stay abroad during the critical election period.
“Those who are conspiring about the election will not succeed. The election will be held in February, and Tarique Rahman will lead the party from within the country,” Zahid Hossain told party supporters.
Tarique Rahman, currently living in London, has long been a central figure in the BNP’s leadership. His potential return to Bangladesh has been a recurring subject of political debate, especially as the country approaches the next general election.
BNP leaders have repeatedly accused the ruling Awami League of attempting to manipulate the electoral process, while the government insists that elections will be held in line with constitutional provisions. Political analysts note that Rahman’s return could significantly energize BNP supporters and reshape the opposition’s campaign strategy.
