Dhaka, Sept 16 (V7N) – Information and Broadcasting Minister Andaleeve Rahman today said journalists play a key role in flourishing democracy, so the media is considered one of the most important pillars of democracy.

He made the remarks while addressing an event marking the 43rd founding anniversary of the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy here.

Referring to the risks and challenges faced by crime reporters, the minister said crime reporters work under tremendous risk as at times, they have to pay a very high price for it.

"It is true that adequate protection or an effective system has yet to be established for those working in the journalism profession in Bangladesh," he said.

Pledging to stand by journalists whenever they have any reasonable need, the minister said, "Whenever you feel that something is necessary, contact me. Together, we will solve the problems. The government is by your side."

The minister's remarks come as the government has taken steps to support journalists, including an initiative to increase the allocation for the Bangladesh Journalist Welfare Trust from Taka 6 crore to Taka 25 crore. The government has also been working on the formation of the 10th Wage Board for journalists to address their professional and welfare concerns.

CRAB President Mirza Mehedi Tamal chaired the event, which was moderated by its General Secretary M M Badshah. Jatiya Press Club President Hasan Hafiz, along with former and current CRAB leaders and members, attended the event.

The Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) is a professional organization representing journalists who cover crime and law enforcement-related news. Crime reporters often face significant risks in their line of duty, including threats, harassment, and physical attacks. The organization works to promote professional standards, protect the rights of its members, and facilitate cooperation between journalists and law enforcement agencies. The 43rd founding anniversary event provided an opportunity for journalists and government officials to discuss the challenges facing the profession and explore ways to address them.
