RAJSHAHI, April 15 (V7N) — Public life in Tanore upazila of Rajshahi has been severely disrupted by frequent load shedding during an ongoing heat wave, leaving residents restless and students anxious ahead of the SSC examinations.
Heat and power crisis
The difference between day and night temperatures has nearly vanished, with intense heat persisting late into the night. Locals report power outages every one to one‑and‑a‑half hours, especially after midnight, making sleep difficult and worsening discomfort.
Residents’ voices
Ashiq Rahman, of Shibrampur, said: “The power went out around midnight and didn’t return until 2 pm. Living in this scorching heat has become unbearable.”
Rashid, a local worker, explained: “Work stops in the office without electricity. At home, the heat is suffocating. Even when it rains, the heat rises again, and without power, it’s intolerable.”
Impact on students
With SSC exams approaching, students and parents are alarmed. Evening and nighttime outages are disrupting study schedules, forcing many to rely on candles or alternative lighting. Students say this has not been sustainable for long, raising fears about exam performance.
Economic disruption
Local traders report fewer buyers in markets due to the outages, while small and large factories face production delays. Transport operators also note reduced activity as the heat and power cuts discourage movement.
Official explanation
Shahadat Hossain, lineman of the Mundumala office of the Rural Electricity Association, said demand in the area is about 5.8 megawatts, but supply is only 3.3 megawatts. “As a result, we are forced to provide load shedding,” he admitted. At the time of reporting, electricity was still unavailable in several areas.
Locals warn that unless supply is restored quickly, public suffering will intensify and students’ futures will be at risk. They have appealed for immediate government intervention.
