RAJSHAHI, March 6, (V7N) - Political discussions in Rajshahi are intensifying over the nomination for the reserved women’s seat in Parliament, with Advocate Shamshad Begum Mitali emerging as a prominent contender.

Mitali, currently president of the Rajshahi District Women’s Party, has long been active in street politics and organizational work. She previously served as the district BNP’s women’s affairs secretary and is widely recognized for providing legal assistance to arrested leaders and activists.

Known as a “prisoner-tortured leader,” Mitali was arrested during a procession in 2014, kept in a dark room, and later imprisoned. Supporters believe this experience strengthened her political resolve.

Her political roots run deep: her father Abdul Hamid Moru, former president and upazila chairman of Bagmara Upazila BNP, was a founding organizer of BNP and vice-president of Rajshahi District BNP. He was brutally murdered by terrorists in 2003, an incident that shocked the region.

Mitali said: “I have been active on the streets during the party’s difficult times, providing legal assistance to leaders and activists. I believe the party will appreciate my sacrifice and contribution.”

Analysts note her grassroots acceptance, family legacy, and resilience as factors placing her in a strong position. However, party insiders emphasize that the final decision rests with the BNP high command.
