RAJSHAHI, Feb 15 (V7N) - A worshipper was shot dead by unidentified miscreants while on his way to a mosque in Rajshahi metropolis on Saturday night, triggering panic in the area.

The incident occurred around 8:00 pm on the road adjacent to the wall of Hojapur cemetery in the city.

The deceased was identified as Md. Mostafa, 50, son of Taimur Uddin of Danshmari village under Motihar police station.

According to police and local sources, Mostafa was heading to the mosque to offer prayers when unknown assailants opened fire on him. He was hit in the right leg and collapsed on the spot. Locals rescued him and rushed him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Emergency department in-charge Dr. Shankar Kumar Biswas said the victim had a gunshot injury to the right leg and also sustained a head wound, causing excessive bleeding. He added that the body has been sent to the morgue for autopsy and the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the report.

Motihar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam Azad said the attackers and the motive behind the killing are yet to be known, and efforts are underway to identify those involved.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police spokesperson Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Gaziur Rahman said police rushed to the scene after receiving information and launched an তদন্ত into the incident, adding that the motive and any political link of the deceased have not yet been confirmed.
