Bagerhat, Sept 12 (V7N) – Residents of Singati village in Fakirhat staged a human chain and protest rally on Friday, accusing Union Parishad (UP) female member Shiuly Zia of attempting to seize land belonging to the local Jamia Mosque, in violation of a court injunction.

Hundreds of villagers and mosque attendees joined the demonstration after Friday prayers at the mosque in Singati, Sadar Union. The protest followed reports that Shiuly’s two sons allegedly threatened worshippers, warning them of legal action if the media reported the incident.

Syed Al Mamun, general secretary of the mosque, alleged that Shiuly has long used her political position to intimidate residents and seize land. “Despite a court order, she, along with her husband Zia and sons, continues to occupy the mosque property,” he said. Mamun added that the family had even once attacked the mosque imam during Friday sermons.

Several villagers claimed that Shiuly has exploited political influence for 17–18 years, initially aligned with the Awami League and currently identifying with the BNP, harassing those who oppose her through legal threats. Protesters demanded accountability for her alleged unlawful occupation and intimidation.

Shiuly Zia, in response, said she has occupied the land since 1990 and denied any political affiliation with the Awami League. “I have always been with the BNP. I am only trying to reclaim my property and am not taking any part of the mosque land,” she stated.

Over 100 local residents participated in the protest, emphasizing that mosque land is sacred and belongs to the community. They warned that they would take stronger action if any attempts are made to seize or exploit the property. The protest concluded with a rally demanding exemplary legal action against Shiuly Zia.
