Dhaka, Sept 13 (V7N) – The Shibir-backed panel “Combined Student Alliance,” contesting in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) and hall union elections, has sharply criticized the resignation of Election Commission member Professor Mafruhi Sattar, comparing it to a “cowardly retreat” just before the announcement of results.
At a press conference held Friday night around 10 p.m. in front of the JUCSU Election Commission office, panel candidates alleged that Professor Sattar’s resignation was aimed at discrediting the election. AGS (Male) candidate Ferdous Al Hasan said Sattar, who is also president of the BNP-backed Teachers’ Forum at JU, made baseless allegations. “We voted in a fair environment with nearly 68 percent turnout. This shows students want JUCSU. His resignation, right before results, reflects a conspiracy to question the credibility of the election,” he stated.
Hasan added that disputes over vote counting arose when the commission allegedly conducted manual counting at the request of a specific student organization, delaying overall results. “Thirty hours have passed, yet votes for only a few posts are counted. Instead of completing the process, he abandoned the field,” he said.
Panel member candidate Nusrat Jahan Ima said, “Such a resignation at the last moment is unacceptable. He should have acted responsibly. If irregularities existed, he should have resigned earlier. Now it looks like running away.”
Other candidates, including VP candidate Arif Ullah and GS candidate Md. Mazharul Islam, also expressed strong objections. Following the press conference, the panel staged a protest rally on campus.
