Madhabpur, Aug 26 (V7N) — In observance of National Fisheries Week 2025, the Madhabpur Upazila Fisheries Office released various species of fish fry into local water bodies this morning to promote sustainable aquaculture and food security.
The Madhabpur Upazila Fisheries Office, under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, organized a fish fry release event on Monday morning to commemorate National Fisheries Week 2025. The program aimed to raise awareness about the importance of fisheries in ensuring national food security, fulfilling nutritional needs, creating employment opportunities, and supporting economic growth.
The ceremony was attended by a range of local officials and stakeholders. Among them were District Fisheries Officer Mohammad Wahidur Rahman Mojumder, Acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer, (UNO) Md. Mujibul Islam, Upazila Fisheries Officer Faridur Rahman, the Upazila Agriculture and Extension Officer, the Livestock Extension Officer, the Upazila Cooperative Officer, and other respected members of the community, along with officials from various departments.
During the event, speakers highlighted the vital contribution of the fisheries sector to Bangladesh’s socio-economic development. They emphasized that responsible fish farming and conservation of native species are key to maintaining biodiversity and ensuring long-term food sustainability.
Following the speeches, a total of 316 kilograms of fish fry were released across three water bodies: the pond adjacent to Noirazuri Beel (near the brick kiln), the Upazila Parishad pond, and the pond of the Assistant Commissioner (Land). The released species included Rui (rohu), Katla, Mrigal, and other native fish varieties.
The initiative is part of a nationwide campaign aimed at increasing public engagement in fish conservation and encouraging community-based aquaculture. National Fisheries Week, observed annually across Bangladesh, features educational programs, hatchery visits, awareness rallies, and stocking of public water bodies to reinforce the government's commitment to the “Blue Economy” and sustainable resource management.
