Rajshahi, July 1 (V7N) — In a significant move under Section 569 of the Jail Code, the Bangladesh government has granted sentence remission to seven inmates serving life terms in Rajshahi Central Jail, leading to their release on Monday night at approximately 8 PM.
The inmates, who were convicted in separate murder cases, had their prison terms reduced by durations ranging from 9 months and 16 days to 2 years, 8 months, and 14 days. All released prisoners are residents of different areas in Naogaon, Rajshahi, and Bogura districts.
According to Senior Jail Superintendent Shah Alam Khan, the Ministry of Home Affairs had reviewed a list of 125 proposed inmates for possible clemency. After detailed scrutiny, 13 prisoners were approved for sentence remission.
“Among them, four have already been released earlier, and two are incarcerated in other facilities to which official communication has been sent. The remaining seven were freed from Rajshahi Central Jail last night,” said Khan.
He also noted that one of the released individuals is mentally unstable and could not be reunited with family due to communication difficulties. Arrangements are being made by prison authorities to ensure the individual’s safe return home under proper supervision.
This release is part of the government’s broader approach to review cases of long-serving convicts who have shown signs of reformation and met legal conditions for clemency.
Background on Legal Provision:
Section 569 of the Jail Code permits sentence remission based on good conduct, behavior, rehabilitation progress, and after a careful assessment by the Ministry of Home Affairs, often aligned with national observances or humanitarian grounds.
