Dhaka, June 26 (V7N) – A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of substantial assets belonging to former Dhaka-20 Member of Parliament and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, former MP Mrinal Kanti Das, and Md. Jahangir Alam, former personal assistant to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The order was issued on Wednesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib in response to separate petitions filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director Mohammad Zulfikar.
According to court directives, four apartments owned by Benazir Ahmed—located in Dhaka’s Eskaton, Dhanmondi, and Dhamrai areas—along with a 10-katha plot in Purbachal, have been seized. Additionally, the court ordered the freezing of shares in three companies under his name, one motor vehicle, and nine bank accounts. The total estimated value of Benazir’s seized immovable properties is approximately Tk 14.80 crore (Tk 148,045,280), while the value of his shares, vehicle, and frozen bank balances amounts to about Tk 1.58 crore (Tk 15,849,286).
The court also ordered the freezing of assets belonging to Benazir Ahmed’s wife, Sahina Begum. These include shares in a company, a deposit account, and two bank accounts holding a combined total of Tk 1.20 crore (Tk 12,086,593).
In a separate ruling, the court ordered the seizure of both movable and immovable assets owned by former MP Mrinal Kanti Das and his wife, Nilima Das. Among the seized assets are an apartment in Dhanmondi valued at Tk 18 lakh, a plot in Purbachal worth Tk 20.44 lakh, and a motor vehicle valued at Tk 86.53 lakh. Additionally, eight bank accounts under Mrinal’s name, with a total balance of Tk 8.73 lakh, have been frozen.
Assets in the name of Nilima Das include a land plot in Mohammadpur valued at Tk 12.5 lakh and an apartment worth Tk 20.2 lakh. The court also ordered the freezing of 30 bank accounts held under her name, with a total balance of Tk 10.61 lakh.
In a third case, the same court ordered the freezing of two bank accounts and savings certificates belonging to Md. Jahangir Alam, the former personal assistant to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The total value of the frozen assets stands at Tk 1.14 crore (Tk 11,475,329). This order was also issued following a petition submitted by the ACC.
These asset seizures are part of the ACC’s ongoing drive to investigate and recover wealth allegedly amassed through illegal means. The court’s actions signal a broader institutional effort to combat corruption among both current and former public officials in Bangladesh.
