Jhalokathi, June 30 (V7N) — Law enforcement officials in Jhalokathi have arrested Mobarak Ali (55), accused of felling a palm tree that served as a safe nesting site for Baya weaver birds (Babui Pakhi). The act resulted in the destruction of over a hundred nests, eggs, and fledglings. The arrest was made on Sunday afternoon by a team from the District Detective Branch (DB) police during a targeted operation.

The palm tree, located in the East Guaton area, had long been a critical safe haven for Baya weavers — birds admired for their intricate, handwoven nests. Mobarak Ali reportedly sold the tree to a timber trader, who cut it down. Visuals of the destruction circulated widely on social media, prompting outrage from conservationists and the public.

In response, the DB police launched an investigation, using digital surveillance and eyewitness accounts to trace and arrest the accused. DB Police Officer-in-Charge Md. Selim Uddin confirmed the arrest and said Mobarak Ali has been charged under the Wildlife Conservation Act and presented before the court.

The Baya weaver, known for its harmless nature and architectural nest-building, is considered a symbol of biodiversity. Environmentalists and local residents have condemned the destruction and are demanding exemplary punishment for the offender.

The Department of Environment and the Forest Department have both launched independent investigations into the incident.
