Dhaka, June 28 (V7N) - Amanullah Chowdhury, Chief Operating Officer of controversial e-commerce platform e-Orange BD and a leader of the ruling party’s youth wing Jubo League, has been arrested by police in connection with a violent attack on student protesters.

According to police sources, Chowdhury was detained Friday afternoon during a raid in the Dhanmondi area of the capital. Sub-Inspector Alamgir Hossain, the duty officer at Airport Police Station, confirmed the arrest.

The arrest stems from a case filed on June 22 at Airport Police Station, accusing Chowdhury and others of involvement in an assault on demonstrators participating in an anti-discrimination student protest.

This is not the first time Amanullah Chowdhury has faced legal action. He was previously arrested on August 18, 2021, by Gulshan police in connection with one of Bangladesh’s largest e-commerce fraud cases, involving e-Orange BD. At the time, allegations emerged that the company had embezzled approximately Tk 1,100 crore (around USD 130 million) from customers under the guise of online sales.

That case also led to the issuing of travel bans by the court against five individuals, including Sonia Mehjabin, the sister of then-Gulshan police inspector (investigation) Sohel Rana, and her husband Masukur Rahman. Mehjabin and Masukur were later arrested and jailed following complaints from defrauded consumers.

Meanwhile, Sohel Rana, one of the alleged masterminds behind the e-Orange scam and a police officer himself, reportedly fled to India to evade arrest.

Amanullah Chowdhury is listed as an accused in both the e-Orange embezzlement case and the recent case involving the attack on student demonstrators.

Law enforcement officials say further legal action will follow pending investigation, and authorities are also reviewing whether additional charges may be filed under the Digital Security Act or organized crime statutes.
