Ashuganj, June 28 (V7N) - A ward leader of the ruling Awami League has been arrested by a joint security force in connection with a case involving explosives, filed after an attack on students during an anti-discrimination protest in Ashuganj.
 
The accused, Kabirul Islam, 56, was taken into custody on Friday during a raid led by the Bangladesh Army in coordination with law enforcement agencies. He was arrested from his residence in the Ashuganj Railgate area, where security personnel also recovered over Tk 7 lakh's in cash.
 
Kabirul Islam is the son of the late Abu Taher and served as the president of a ward-level committee under the Ashuganj Sadar Union unit of the Awami League.
 
According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Khairul Alam of Ashuganj Police Station, Kabirul is named in multiple cases under the Explosive Substances Act. “He has been sent to jail through the court following his arrest,” OC Khairul confirmed.
 
The arrest comes amid heightened tensions following recent attacks on students who had organized protests against inequality and social discrimination. Authorities have launched multiple investigations and made several arrests in connection with the violence, which drew national attention and condemnation from civil rights groups.
 
Security officials have not yet disclosed whether further charges will be added or if additional individuals are under surveillance in relation to the protest-day violence.
