Dhaka, May 04 (V7N) — The High Court has issued a rule asking why 208 Bangladeshi expatriates, who were arrested and later repatriated from Dubai and Saudi Arabia, should not each receive Tk 2.5 million in compensation for their alleged suffering linked to the July movement.
The rule was issued on Monday by a High Court bench led by Justice Fatema Najeeb following a hearing on a writ petition.
According to the petitioner, the expatriates were detained in connection with their participation in the July movement and were subsequently sentenced before being released. Their release reportedly came after intervention by interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus.
After their release, the individuals were sent back to Bangladesh. The petition states that the entire episode caused significant financial losses and hardship for the affected expatriates.
The court’s rule seeks an explanation from the relevant authorities as to why compensation should not be awarded, marking a significant legal development in addressing the grievances of the returned workers.
