Dhaka, Jun 01 (V7N) – The trial of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for alleged crimes against humanity during the July mass uprising will be broadcast live from the International Crimes Tribunal-1, beginning Sunday (June 1).
Confirming the development, tribunal prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said the formal complaint against Sheikh Hasina will be submitted to the court on Sunday. The two other accused in the case are former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.
The prosecutor stated that BTV may broadcast the hearing live, particularly the session in which the court decides whether to take the formal complaint into account.
The courtroom was recently upgraded with digital broadcasting technology on May 20, allowing the tribunal to record or livestream proceedings. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam noted on social media that the court now has the option to make trial footage accessible via TV or social media, pending judicial approval.
The International Crimes Tribunal, reconstituted following the fall of the Awami League government during the mass uprising on August 5, 2024, is currently investigating crimes committed between July and August 2024, including enforced disappearances, killings, and torture of civilians and protesters.
The tribunal is also reviewing human rights violations that allegedly occurred during the 15-and-a-half-year tenure of the Awami League government. However, the trial surrounding the July genocide has taken center stage due to its scope and political sensitivity.
To expedite proceedings, the interim government established International Crimes Tribunal-2 on May 8. Both tribunals are working in tandem to ensure accountability for the atrocities committed during and after the uprising.
More details are expected to emerge following Sunday’s submission of charges.
