Dhaka, Oct 15 (V7N) – Despite repeated warnings and safety directives, chemical warehouses continue to operate without proper precautions, said Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Brigadier General Mohammad Zahid Kamal.
He made the remarks late Tuesday night, around 11:15 p.m., after inspecting the site of a devastating fire that broke out in a chemical storage facility in Mirpur, Dhaka.
The Fire Service DG expressed frustration over the continued disregard for safety guidelines, noting that the agency has repeatedly conducted awareness campaigns and issued instructions to prevent such disasters. “Despite our repeated warnings, people are not following safety directives regarding chemical warehouses. We do not want to see such tragic incidents repeated,” he told reporters at the scene.
Brigadier General Kamal also observed that the building’s structure appeared to violate national building codes, indicating serious lapses in construction safety.
He further stated that while the fire was brought under control, complete safety had not yet been ensured. “The situation is under control now, but there is still a risk of reignition due to the presence of chemicals. Our fire units will remain on site throughout the night,” he added.
Authorities suspect that the fire spread rapidly due to the presence of flammable materials inside the warehouse. A detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause and assess whether the building’s owners violated safety regulations.
