Dhaka, May 17 (V7N) — Teachers of the mosque-based Quran and Islamic education program, run under the Islamic Foundation, staged a protest on Saturday morning by surrounding the Planning Commission in the capital. The protest, which began at 10 AM, brought traffic to a standstill on the adjacent road as demonstrators demanded resolution of several pressing issues.
The protesting teachers are demanding the payment of five months' outstanding salaries, a revision of their monthly remuneration, and other employment benefits. Their five-point demand includes:
-
Immediate payment of five months' unpaid salaries.
-
Permanent job placement and inclusion under the government’s revenue sector.
-
Payment of Eid-ul-Azha and previously unpaid Eid-ul-Fitr bonuses.
-
An increase in monthly salary from Tk 5,000 to Tk 15,000.
-
Official written confirmation of all commitments.
Although A. Salam Khan, Director General of the Islamic Foundation, verbally assured the teachers that their demands would be met, the demonstrators have declared they will not call off the sit-in until a written assurance is provided by the authorities.
The protest reflects growing frustration among the educators, many of whom rely solely on this modest stipend to support their families. As of Saturday evening, the demonstration continued in front of the Planning Commission, with calls for swift government intervention.
