Rajshahi, Sept 12 (V7N) – The hair trade in Tanore upazila has emerged as a unique and successful enterprise, providing livelihoods for thousands of families while exporting processed hair to countries including China, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Myanmar, Japan, and South Korea. The hair is primarily used in wigs, cosmetics, and luxury products.

Processing centers have been established in villages across Kamar Gaon and Kolma unions, employing thousands of men and women. Chaubaria Bazaar serves as the main hub, hosting hair markets six days a week where 30–40 kilograms of hair are traded daily, valued at approximately Tk 300,000. The business has also expanded into nearby Naogaon districts, with premium hair over 12 inches fetching up to Tk 20,000 per kilogram.

Women are engaged in detangling and sorting hair, earning Tk 120 per day, while many housewives, farmers, and students participate. However, prolonged exposure to hair dust poses health risks.

Owners buy raw hair at Tk 3,500 per kilogram and sell processed hair at Tk 8,000 per kilogram, with longer, higher-quality hair fetching even higher prices. Local leaders and officials emphasize that with government support and institutional financing, the sector could develop into a strong rural industry, enhancing community livelihoods.
