Dhaka, May 16 (V7N) – Prime Minister’s Finance and Planning Advisor Dr. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir has alleged that large development projects in Gopalganj were implemented for “looting purposes” rather than public service.
He made the remarks while speaking at the “Debate for Democracy” programme on budget and inflation challenges held at FDC on Saturday (May 16).
The finance advisor claimed that many major public institutions built with state funds in Gopalganj are not serving the people effectively, saying that these institutions lack proper staffing and public service delivery.
Economy Described as Fragile
He further stated that the country’s economy is currently “destroyed and fragile,” adding that the government is facing financial constraints but is still attempting recovery and stabilization.
According to him, efforts are underway to dismantle what he described as “oligarchic control” in key sectors, including the power sector, to improve transparency and efficiency.
Economic Reform Plans
The advisor outlined several policy directions, including:
-
Establishment of new economic zones in the northern region outside Dhaka and Chattogram
-
Reopening of closed industrial factories
-
Expansion of investment and employment opportunities
-
Promotion of “economic democracy” to reduce inequality and inflationary pressure
He said these steps are part of a broader government strategy aimed at rebuilding economic stability and improving governance across sectors.
