Dhaka, July 27 (V7N) – Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus visited the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) on Saturday night to monitor the medical care being provided to victims of the Milestone School and College plane crash.
Arriving at 9:10 PM, the Chief Adviser was briefed by the institute’s director, Professor Mohammed Nasir Uddin, on the status of the injured and the ongoing treatment efforts. According to the update, 4 patients remain in critical condition, 9 are in the severe category, and 23 are receiving intermediate care. The patients are being treated by a multidisciplinary medical board with input from foreign and local specialists under international protocols.
The Chief Adviser inquired about the availability of medical equipment, medicine, and necessary supplies. The director assured him that the government had ensured full support, while a few critical items were brought in by international medical teams.
Special Assistant Professor Md. Sayedur Rahman explained that many burn victims were initially treated at nearby hospitals and then transferred to specialized care. He noted that some confusion arose early on due to multiple transfers and difficulties in identifying several victims, requiring DNA profiling.
He further pointed out that the shortage of ambulances during emergency transfers highlighted existing gaps in the national health emergency response system.
The Chief Adviser instructed authorities to submit immediate action plans to address these gaps and emphasized the need for comprehensive trauma counselling for victims, their families, and the Milestone School community. He also directed hospital staff to be attentive to the needs of patients’ relatives staying on site.
Expressing deep gratitude to all doctors, nurses, and support staff, the Chief Adviser praised the dedication of both local and international teams working together during the crisis. Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum accompanied him during the visit.
